If you decide that a child requires a referral for developmental screening, arrange a time to speak with the parent or caregiver so that they can plan for some extra time. Provide what you have recorded of their child's behavior and inquire what they have observed at home.  Present the information with grace and concern, because this can be very difficult for a parent to hear. Let them know that this is a situation happening at school, and that perhaps they should see a physician, because ultimately everyone wants what is best for the child, their education, and happiness. Let them know that there are early intervention resources available. Confidentiality is crucial for the family's sense of safety and privacy at school. Especially considering cultural differences, medical care is often a very private matter. In order to maintain trust and open communication, keeping concerns and documentation confidential is a priority. Not maintaining confidentiality can result in stigma against the child, adverse affects on the child's growth and access to treatment due to stress or stigma, loss of trust from the family, loss of trust from other families, conflict between the families, conflict between the business and any of the families, affecting the family's reputation, affecting the business's reputation and income, legal action.
